Job Summary/Essential Job Functions: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position assists the Department of Genetics, Genomics and Informatics with an ongoing research project studying inflammatory bowel disease. Duties include designing and conducting assigned project-related analyses using epidemiological and statistical methods, as well as assuming day-to-day data management and quality control. Additional duties include writing manuscripts for scientific journals, presenting findings at scientific meetings, determining appropriate study designs, consulting, advising, and supervising students and postdocs in the Simpson Lab.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts primary data analyses that includes designing and performing complex statistical analyses, and development of new statistical approaches as needed.
Analyzes data, prepares figures, and texts for poster presentations, and/or publications and extramural grant submissions on behalf of the PI.
Evaluates study designs and suggests changes where appropriate.
Performs bioinformatics and epidemiological analyses of data generated in house and by external collaborators.
Identifies appropriate statistical models to use once a hypothesis has been identified.
Develops analytic protocols, defines expected endpoints, and performs statistical evaluations of results to make conclusions.
Determines study designs and power calculations for grant applications.
Advises the PI of which protocols should be used in quality control and data management.
Manages external collaborations set up by the PI, including conferencing with the external lab and as national and international consortia.
Supervises and develops standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Lab Staff/Trainees and Managing External Collaborations/Research Projects.
Oversees the work of temporary students, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students and trains them on statistics, epidemiology, and genetics, as well as computational techniques.
Reports any inappropriate ethical, compliance, or scientific misconduct issues to the PI.
