The OHSU Dermatology Research Division merges basic, clinical and translational research in epithelial cell cancers and dermatologic diseases. Our basic and clinician-scientists are committed to innovative research on cancer and inflammation of skin with an impact on understanding causes and improving future treatment of muco-cutaneous diseases and providing more effective patient care. The person who fills this position will work with Rajan Kulkarni, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, to investigate methods for early detection of melanoma and other cancers and their recurrence with the goal of enabling translational studies. Research projects include studies of methods for identifying melanoma signatures in the blood and collaboration with other groups performing similar projects. The Senior Research Associate will carry out advanced protocols including cell culture, molecular biology (DNA, RNA and protein extraction from blood, tissue and saliva, sequencing, design and validation of sequencing and qPCR primers, cloning), protein analysis by Western blot, and flow cytometry. The Senior Research Associate will also analyze and manage data. Additionally, the Senior Research Associate will serve as the Kulkarni lab manager, ordering/managing supplies and equipment and managing funding sources; training staff, trainees, and volunteers; and independently managing projects. The schedule will be full time, including evenings and weekends as needed for experiments. The location will be primarily in the Kulkarni laboratories at OHSU and the VA, but may also extend to the Dermatology clinic and laboratories as assigned for collaborations or use of core research services. There may be opportunities to travel to professional meetings, including the Montagna Symposium on the Biology of Skin, depending on project participation. Exposure as part of this position may include toxic chemicals and drugs, animal tissues, human tissues and fluids, depending on the experiments performed.
