Reducing nutrient (primarily nitrogen and phosphorus) and contaminant (PFAS and pathogen) transport from dairy production systems and fields to surface and groundwater is a grand challenge for all of agriculture, and particularly so for Wisconsin dairy farms. Current trends in dairy production systems as well as off-farm waste streams are putting greater pressure on our landscape to store nutrients and filter contaminants and challenge the viability of the industry. To help address these issues, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking an Assistant Professor to explore and develop innovative land and water stewardship solutions related to dairy production.

We are seeking applicants from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences at UW-Madison. The position carries a commitment to the three functions of research, instruction, outreach, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to the position and rank. Areas of focus could include, but are not limited to, nutrient and contaminant transport, agroecosystem or biogeochemical simulation modeling, measurement and sensing technology, landscape and hydrologic processes, and agronomic innovations to reducing nutrient and contaminant losses. The incumbent's departmental tenure home is negotiable, but likely will be the Department of Soil Science, Department of Agronomy, or Department of Biological Systems Engineering.

This newly-created position is supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The Hub is an exciting new initiative at the three leading UW agricultural schools (UW-Madison, UW-Platteville, and UW-River Falls) to foster dairy research, education and outreach in the priority areas of Stewarding Land and Water Resources, Ensuring Animal Health and Welfare, Growing Farm Businesses and Communities, and Enriching Human Health and Nutrition. The land and water stewardship Assistant Professor will join a world-class university and a college with diverse expertise in agricultural and life sciences. The Wisconsin dairy sector has a strong collaborative relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is highly motivated to help explore and develop innovative solutions to the industry?s challenges. As a Hub-supported position, the faculty member will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other Hub researchers, pursue Hub funding opportunities, and participate in Hub programs. The incumbent will perform research, teaching, and outreach in their area of expertise in ways that are relevant to dairy agriculture and related fields.

The incumbent will develop an extramurally-funded research program recognized at state-, national-, and international-levels for innovative approaches to advancing dairy-related land and water stewardship. The candidate will work independently and also within a collaborative research team to support the mission of the Dairy Innovation Hub.

The incumbent will teach classes in their department which also contribute to college undergraduate and graduate programs. Teaching responsibilities will be commensurate with college expectations and consistent with the teaching loads of other departmental faculty.

The incumbent will be expected to facilitate interdisciplinary efforts and collaborative efforts within their department, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and federal labs.
