Reporting to the Senior Systems Analyst, the Systems Analyst will be responsible for monitoring and supporting the departments' internal and external technology applications, ensuring that the highest level of service is provided to the Columbia University research community. The preferred candidate must have a passion for data, accuracy and efficiency and be part of a team that provides expert guidance and timely service to the University Community through a commitment to health and safety. The Systems Analyst will process data analysis tasks with high efficiency and quality in a fast paced environment to support technology solutions that address the operational needs and requirements of the department. The preferred candidate will excel at working in a team environment supporting and troubleshooting technology applications, and will develop relationships with internal staff and external clients and vendors to ensure effective/efficient implementation of existing and planned technology-based environmental health and safety programs.
Collaborate with the Senior Systems Analyst and EH&S management team in the development and application of a comprehensive strategy for the use of technology-based tools and resources to further the goals of Columbia University's environmental health and safety programs.
Implementation, ongoing use, refinement, and training program for electronic and web-based environmental health and safety applications, databases and tools for EH&S and laboratory personnel.
Troubleshoot application issues, determine sources of problems and identify solutions for EH&S staff and external clients.
Support the relationships between EH&S and SaaS vendors, and liaise with University IT resources.
Interact regularly with EH&S staff to produce technology solutions that address the operational needs of the department and research community, and other affiliate user groups.
Participate in team meetings and gain an understanding of EH&S staff and external client needs.
Respond in a timely manner to service issues and requests
Set up accounts for new users in appropriate databases
Perform data entry and data cleaning; Review data for completeness and accuracy.
Generate reports and analyze large sets of program data to identify opportunities to improve and produce technology solutions that address the operational needs of the department and research community.
Participate in the evaluation of new technologies to ensure the data analysis and visualization tools are in line with EH&S needs.
Assist in hiring, training and supervising Federal Work-Study students to support data entry projects as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required with an educational emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, Life Sciences, Engineering; 0-1-year relevant work experience, preferably in a research or academic setting.
Type preferred qualifications
Demonstrable technical and computer skills are required. Extensive data entry work, Proficiency in Excel, SQL databases, and content management systems (CMS) is desirable.
A willingness to gain an appreciation for and participate actively in environmental health and safety issues and operations.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical, verbal and written skills, as well as the ability to train others on the use of technology applications, creativity, professionalism, while thriving in a team-based, collaborative work environment, is essential.
