Specialist (Junior, Assistant, Associate or Full) - Ashish Raj A Specialist position open to any level from junior to full is requested to be opened at the Raj laboratory at the Department of Radiology at UCSF. The Raj lab is currently located at Parnassus campus, AC116. The hired candidate will operate out of this location. This is a Specialist position, specializing in Data Science. Therefore, the position is designed to correspond closely to the Data Scientist role in industry and academia. The specific functions and roles relevant to this position are listed below: Mandatory roles: You will work with machine learning and data mining techniques and algorithms, especially, but not exclusively, applicable to brain imaging. In particular you will apply deep learning and other modern machine learning techniques to imaging and non-imaging data. You will operationalize, manage and maintain the computing systems used in the Raj laboratory, including shared HPC cluster, GPUs and servers. This role requires some level of Linux and system administration capabilities. You will develop software tools, processing pipelines and user interfaces for analyzing and visualizing brain imaging data and recordings of neural signals. These processes should also be general and scalable enough to be applicable to non-brain datasets. You will develop and maintain the lab’s computational infrastructure, including Python and MATLAB scripts and image processing pipelines and network analysis tools. This will include a fully specified toolbox, either as self-contained code to be uploaded to GitHub, or a web interface. Either way, the software will be capable of delivering the aforementioned pipelines to the general public. You will develop novel computational algorithms for brain networks, dynamics of neural activity and pathology progression. You will help analyze datasets of patients suffering from various neurological diseases, especially Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias, with the goal of understanding and predicting underlying pathological processes in the brain’s network with an effective data-driven method. You will have significant responsibility for several ongoing projects, and will serve as a shared resource for group personnel in their ongoing research projects and software creation. You will be expected to assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant applications within the laboratory, including those authored by other group members. Desirable roles: You will also have the opportunity to work on collaborative projects in MR neuro-imaging with the Department of Neurology and the graduate program in bioengineering at UCSF. There will be opportunities for you to seek external funding from granting agencies, related to projects within the laboratory, for career development, and we will assist you in this capacity. Minimum qualifications: Junior rank: A BA degree (or equivalent degree) in a computational field, including: computer science, data science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or statistics. Assistant or Associate ranks: MS degree (or equivalent degree) in a computational field, including: computer science, data science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or statistics OR five to ten years of relevant experience. Full rank: a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in a computational field, including: computer science, data science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or statistics OR ten or more years of relevant experience. Some research experience in related fields, including research conducted in an undergraduate or graduate research program. For more senior grades substantial work and/or research experience are required, as mandated by UCSF academic personnel policies. Candidate must meet the qualifications by the time of appointment. Candidate's CV must list qualifications (or if pending) upon submission. Preferred qualifications: A terminal post-graduate degree (MS or equivalent degree) in a computational field, including: computer science, data science, engineering, physics, chemistry, statistics, or equivalent degree from related fields. UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
