The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position for a Translational Life Science Technology (TLST) class being taught in Fall 2020 at its branch campus at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland.
The TLST degree is a Bachelor of Science for graduates of community college or junior-level students from 4-year institutions interested in working in the biotechnology industry. The program educates students on translational science, which is the process of turning scientific discoveries into life-saving solutions, by combining the theory of a traditional life science degree with hands-on, real-world examples of the work conducted in a biotechnology company.
Currently, the TLST program is looking for an adjunct faculty member to teach bioprocess design and control. The first half of the course focuses on developing mathematical models for basic bioprocesses such as continuous reactor systems and heat transfer equipment. The second half of the course focuses on applying classical control theory to bioprocesses. Students construct block flow diagrams for the components of the control loop, and learn how to calculate the time domain closed loop response. Students also learn how to design feed-back control systems and various controller tuning techniques. The use of MATLAB, SIMULink, and instructor-written software allows students to observe process control behavior for a wide range of systems.
TLST classes are typically 1-2 times per week for a fifteen-week semester, likely in the mornings or evenings to accommodate the schedule of the students.
To apply, applicants must have a graduate degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, public health, or a related professional field (Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred). Experience in the biotechnology industry, government, or academia conducting research related to translational science is strongly preferred. Previous university teaching experience is helpful though not required.
