The applicant will have the responsibility of performing laboratory work in a research laboratory focused on bacterial pathogen-host interactions with relevance to chronic lung infection.
40% Carries out complex, multi-step laboratory procedures specified in Standard Operating Procedures or through the instruction of a postdoctoral fellow and graduate student. These procedures will be used to characterize how bacteria pathogens acquire nutrients within the human host environment, specifically as they relate to chronic respiratory infections in CF patients. A secondary objective will be to characterize the growth of polymicrobial communities in the airways of mice using an acute pneumonia model. The candidate will design experiments, select and adapt instruments and methods to meet the requirements of the laboratory protocols and experimental objectives.
20% Employs a wide range of molecular, biochemical, and environmental chemistry methods to characterize the in vivo growth physiology of respiratory pathogens. Duties will include quantifying and cataloging the microbiome of the airways, monitoring gene expression of microbial flora in human tissues, and characterizing the inflammatory response of human bronchial epithelial cells to commensal and pathogenic bacteria. Tabulates and graphs data and maintains and updates detailed procedures and results in an electronic laboratory notebook. Uses data to prepare written and oral progress reports to the PI and research group.
20% Participates in ordering, preparing and laying out supplies, equipment and apparatus. Operates, maintains and calibrates equipment common to area of assignment. Modifies and adapts laboratory equipment to the special demands of the laboratory. Assists in generating SOPs and assisting the PI in ensuring Biosafety Level 2 requirements are adhered to.
15% Assign and direct work of student workers. Responsible for the training and supervision of undergraduates working in the lab.
5% Reviews literature as suggested by the PI. Selects relevant facts, techniques and procedures from the literature. Summarizes findings from the literature and periodically presents these findings at lab meetings.

Required Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree (preferably in Microbiology) or college level coursework in the biological sciences and laboratory experience to total four years. Previous lab experience required, and must be experienced with a range of molecular biology methods (cloning, genetic screens, transposon mutagenesis and quantitative PCR), bacterial culturing, and microscopy. Experience with animal models and/or cell culture is essential, and familiarity with general laboratory duties (media preparation, ordering, lab safety and orientation, chemical inventories) is an asset.
