The Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) invites applications for a Research Associate position as part of a large national research program called Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO).Â The goal of ECHO is to capitalize on existing study populations to investigate environmental exposures on child health and development, with a particular focus on airways, obesity, neurodevelopment and pre-, peri- and postnatal health. The selected candidate is expected to participate in scientific activities including research to understand how maternal psychosocial stressors and environmental pollutants in pregnancy influence epigenetics underlying infant and child health outcomes. An interest in epigenetic research, and the role it may play in environmental health and disease is key. Familiarity with Illumina EPIC array data and/or whole genome bisulfite sequencing is preferred. The ability to work independently, to proactively seek guidance when needed and to generate his/her own line of research aligned with Center goals is essential. This is an opportunity to work with world-class investigators from two closely integrated Centers at USC: the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center (SCEHSC), a research center funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and the Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES) Center, a research center funded by the NIEHS, NIMHD and the EPA. The SCEHSC houses one of the leading research groups in environmental epidemiology and biostatistics, with a particularly strong reputation in respiratory and metabolic diseases as well as methodological research in environmental and genetic epidemiology. The MADRES Center is investigating the role of prenatal environmental exposures and social determinants of the development of childhood obesity as well as other metabolic and respiratory health outcomes.
Specific responsibilities will include the following:
Generates scientific hypotheses and conducts data analysis from start to finish
Works independently with minimal supervision
Writes manuscripts of completed work
Contribute intellectually to scientific goals
The applicant must have a PhD in epidemiology or biostatistics, life sciences, molecular biology, genetics or closely related field. The ideal applicant will have experience and interest in epigenetics
