The Gale Lab in the UW Department of Immunology has an excellent opportunity for a Research Scientist 3.
The employee occupying this position will perform virologic and immunologic research in an immunology laboratory. This work will be focused on assessing the virus/host interactions that control innate immunity and the outcome of infection by Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, flaviviruses (including West Nile virus, Zika virus, and dengue virus), and lentiviruses (including HIV and SIV). The individual in this position will report to the lab director, Michael Gale, in the Department of Immunology.
Perform virologic and immunologic assays of cell model systems infected with Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, flaviviruses (including West Nile virus, Zika virus, and dengue virus), and lentiviruses (including HIV and SIV).
Optimize and perform complex immunologic and antiviral assays in vitro tissue culture systems, including assessment of protein interactions.
Design and carry out cell isolation techniques as well as FACS analyses.
Develop extensions of existing methods and protocols.
Work independently with the ability to design insightful experiments.
Provide status reports to the project manager, research assistant professor, and principal investigator.
Perform molecular biology techniques including PCR analysis, western blotting, qRT-PCR, and cDNA cloning.
Organize and record data; detailed and meticulous record keeping is required.
Participate actively in laboratory meetings.
Strong organizational abilities with a keen ability to work to achieve deadlines and specified milestones.
Perform routine data analysis and assist in the quality control of data.
Ability to work in a team and collaborative environment; experience working on collaborative projects to design and implement studies.
Ability to work flexible hours to meet experimental and project deadline requirements.
Willingness to quickly change direction and priorities based on a rapidly evolving research program.
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field with 3 or more years of relevant postgraduate research experience in the area of virology and/or immunology.
Or a Master's degree in biological sciences or related field with 1 or more years of relevant postgraduate research experience in the area of virology and/or immunology.
Must be able to work independently and have a strong attention for detail.
Must be highly motivated with excellent time management skills.
Ability to organize and maintain accurate records.
Experience using EXCEL, Flo Jo, Prism Graph, and PowerPoint.
Ability to work in a team environment and laboratory setting.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
PhD in biological sciences or related field.
