USCâs Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences: Marine Environmental Biology is seeking a Laboratory Technician in the laboratory of David A. Caron within the marine microbial ecology group in the Department of Biology at the University of Southern California.Â Research projects focus on the diversity, ecology and physiology of single-celled eukaryotic organisms (protists: microalgae and protozoa).Â Projects in which the candidate will be involved include: field and laboratory studies involving harmful algae and cyanobacteria in coastal, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems of California; time-series studies of the diversity and gene expression of protists in natural communities off the coast of southern California; studies of protists diversity, trophic activities and gene expression using high-throughput transcriptomic profiling and other state-of-the-art technologies conducted off Hawaii.
Overall duties include participation in planning, designing and conducting research projects that align with the goals of ongoing research programs.Â
Specific responsibilities include contributing to the performance of experiments involving the culture of microorganisms.
Assistance with maintaining a small culture collection, and molecular biological analyses of genetic diversity and gene expression of microbial eukaryotes.Â
Participation in one- to four-day extemporaneous field trips will be an occasional activity.Â
Strong practical skills in basic microbiology and molecular biology are essential.Â
Some experience with next-gen sequencing, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, nucleic acid quantification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) including quantitative real-time PCR, designing PCR primers, and DNA sequence alignments and analyses are preferred.Â
The candidate should feel comfortable utilizing electronic resources, operating and maintaining laboratory/scientific equipment, and performing other related duties as assigned or requested.
Ability to work effectively with, and assist students and other personnel in the lab and in the field is required.
Compensation will commensurate with experience.
