We are one of the first public schools in the area to offer opportunities for children to learn Spanish in Elementary School.
Job Title: Founding Teacherof Spanish/ TESOL Teacher (Part-time, afternoons 5 days per week 12:30- 4:30)
Description: Truxton Academy Charter School founding teachers will be instrumental in planning and growing the school. The people in these positions will be involved in curriculum development and become teacher leaders as the school grows. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker and problem solver who is also a team player. Teachers in this role must believe in all children’s capabilities and work with school staff to create engaging hands-on learning opportunities for students using both indoor and outdoor learning spaces. This position includes teaching Spanish and possibly providing instruction to English Language Learners. Additionally, the person in this position will lead an after school enrichment program. The ideal candidate is one is flexible and child-centered team player. There may be opportunities for extra hours or itinerant positions with neighboring school districts.
Prepare joyful, rigorous, inclusive, and engaging project-based lessons in Spanish for elementary-aged children that demonstrate fidelity to the NYS Learning Standards
Provide English instruction to English Language Learners (through co-teaching and specific language instruction)
Provide Spanish vocabulary and language to support the use of Spanish by all staff members
Provide Spanish language resources to parents and families
Provide translation services of documents and meetings for Spanish speaking families in the school
Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment, contribute to creating a “School Family” for all children
Plan and teach using methods and materials that engage the whole child’s development; social-emotional, fine and gross motor, academics, critical thinking and problem solving
Use assessment data (formal and informal) to effectively differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners
Co- plan and co-teach with teachers and teaching staff
Work as a team with parents and family members
Build strong family connections through regular communication (newsletters, phone calls, etc.) and home visits
Contribute to the professional community and “School Family” by identifying needs in the school and developing solutions with the coworkers
Demonstrate the school’s character virtues and integrate Conscious Discipline into instruction and daily routines
Teach Spanish in conjunction with core subjects and help other staff members embed Spanish in the classroom learning environment
Lead an Enrichment Extended Day Program for 1 hour a day
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
NYS Certification in Elementary Education or TESOL certification
Fluency in Spanish Language
Desired Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in education
NYS Elementary Education AND TESOL certification
Elementary Level teaching experience
Experience integrating digital resources into teaching and learning activities
Experience with, and knowledge of, assessment programs for elementary students
Experience with, and knowledge, of differentiation strategies to reach all learners

Brief Description of School:
Truxton Academy Charter School serves Truxton, New York, and surrounding communities. The school is situated in northern Cortland County surrounded by farms, forests, and other natural areas. It provides a unique educational design reflecting the desire to establish an alternative elementary school offering the opportunity for students to learn in a rigorous academic environment with a relevant, dynamic curriculum. Participating students will experience an integrated Project-Based Learning curriculum, STEM, Spanish language learning, and Conscious Discipline. Environmental sites, local farms, and agri-businesses will be essential components of the learning experience at Truxton Academy.
Truxton Academy Charter School will open in Truxton, New York in the fall of 2019, with kindergarten, first, and second grade students in three to four classrooms. The school will expand one grade level yearly until reaching full operation (K-6th grade), serving over 140 elementary students by 2025.
