Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years experience working in an Athletic Communications/Sports Information/Media relations office (collegiate or professional), sports journalism and/or marketing/promotions environment. Working knowledge of desktop publishing & statistical software.
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Prior experience in a Division I athletics program. Prior experience with staff supervision. Prior experience with multimedia platforms. Prior experience with video production, website maintenance and/or social media communications. Understanding of NCAA Rules Compliance (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).
Brief Description of Duties:
The Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications position is responsible for the development, implementation and management of the Office of Strategic Communications. The selected candidate is responsible for setting the direction for our strategic communication and digital efforts, which includes news, ticket sales and marketing, corporate sponsor integration, intercollegiate contest results, team/department accomplishments and all other athletic department related information by initiating and cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national print and electronic media outlets to increase revenue and recognition opportunities for Stony Brook Athletics.
This position will be responsible for meeting with internal clients to conceptualize ideas and establish marketing, social media and production schedules to deliver successful, engaging content across multiple social media platforms. The Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications position will be the primary contact for managing radio, television, website and other media contracts as well as the conference digital network. The Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications will assist senior leadership in developing strategies that raise brand awareness, increase fan engagement, create revenue generating initiatives and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. The Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications has a direct report to the Sr. Associate Director of Athletics, Department of Athletics and dotted line report to the VP for University Marketing and Communications Office.
Daily Management of Athletic Communications Office
The Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications is responsible for the daily management of the communications office which is comprised of three full-time communications assistants, the Director of Digital Media and various student assistants and independent contractors. Daily responsibilities include reporting of intercollegiate contest results, management of media outlets, scheduling interviews with coaches & student-athletes, coordinating photo-shoots, promoting teams and student-athletes for local, regional & national awards, and representing the athletic department at local, regional & national media functions. Develop, implement and manage strategic plan and leadership goals in line with the Director of Athletics’ vision for Stony Brook Athletics.
Responsible for the supervision, production and management of various multimedia platforms in an effort to promote Stony Brook University Athletic achievements and news.
Website: Oversee the development, design and daily maintenance of the Athletic Department website. The Associate AD for Strategic Communications will act as the primary liaison with web hosting company and will communicate changes/adjustments as needed.
Radio/TV Broadcasts: Oversee the contractual agreements with radio and television outlets and create an annual broadcast schedule of intercollegiate contests.
Video-Streaming: The Associate AD will oversee all aspects of video-streaming intercollegiate contests as part of the conference digital network. This includes staffing, producing and scheduling of all televised contests.
Mobile Applications: This position is responsible for managing relationships with mobile application vendors and providing current information about Stony Brook Athletics
Social Media Outlets: The Associate Athletic Director with their staff are directly responsible for updating and managing the various department social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.).
Create and manage the production of online virtual media guides, recruiting brochures (including photographs), and schedule cards for 18 intercollegiate sports. This involves meeting with individual coaches, writing copy, and creating the layout and design with a desktop publisher. Produce postseason guides for teams participating in playoffs. Additional publication responsibilities include working with the External Services staff in producing the various fundraising and marketing materials as well as sport program newsletters and game programs for specific teams.
Manage the athletic communications budget which includes monitoring, projecting and identifying cost effective operational needs.
The Associate Athletic Director is responsible for the management and supervision of courtside and press box personnel at home contests, to include but not limited to:
Ensuring accurate official statistics
Assigning public address duties, filling in as needed
Accommodating media by providing access (to press box, field, locker-room and press conference), information, and statistics
Perform play by play or color commentary duties for internet broadcasts of selected contests
Schedule pre or post game interviews with media
Prepare game programs and game notes
Develop, produce and manage all post-game releases for dispersal to local, regional and national media outlets
Hire and manage all communications staff for game day productions
Archive all historical information
The Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for recruiting, interviewing, hiring and management of all staff, student staff, interns and GA’s, as well as other game day staff and/or Independent Contractors necessary to staff the Office of Strategic Communications.
The Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for assigning all primary contacts for our intercollegiate sports. Responsibilities include travel to away contests, daily updates on teams through statistical reporting and updating of website, preparation of game notes and program for each game, interaction with and providing media with team information at games and in response to requests, handling of all media responsibilities on game day, attending media luncheons and banquets, all post-game efforts including story, box-score, statistics and reporting results to media outlets, and pitching stories to local, regional and national media. Additional responsibilities include compiling statistics at the conclusion of all home athletic contests and selected away contests, reporting information to media outlets, reporting all stats/awards and/or individual accomplishments to media on a daily basis, and filing weekly reports with Conference Office as requested.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
