St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks an energetic and dynamic science educator to serve as a Biology and Life Science teacher beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching rigorous, laboratory-based biology and be able to teach 9th grade biology and 6th grade life science, though candidates more suited to a single age group will also be considered.
St. Mark’s students are eager and motivated learners, and the science courses are based upon frequent laboratory experiences. A strong candidate should be able to design and conduct laboratory activities, teach with an engaging classroom style, and appeal to the learning styles of a diverse and extremely talented group of boys. The ability to collaborate with the other biology teachers on lesson plans, class activities, and laboratory experiences is essential. Moreover, candidates should have a desire to participate enthusiastically in activities outside of the classroom, such as coaching, club sponsorship, or the St. Mark’s Wilderness Program. Likewise, he or she should demonstrate a commitment to character and leadership education for all boys, giving the same emphasis to these goals as given to classroom accomplishments.
Teaching a total of four science courses across the Upper and Middle Schools
Serving as an advisor to a small group of boys
Contributing to the broader community by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
Participating in the character and leadership education program
Experience / Qualifications & Skills
A bachelor’s degree in a field of biological science is required; a master’s degree in a field of science or science education is preferred.
Five or more years of teaching science in middle and/or high school; independent school experience is a plus.
Knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning
Fluency with a variety of technology tools to advance learning
Passion for subject matter and for working with young people and colleagues
Enthusiastic and collaborative approach to working with colleagues
