The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics is one of the nationâs premier health policy research centers.Â Housed jointly in the School of Pharmacy and Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC), its mission is to measurably improve value in health care through evidence-based policy solutions, research excellence, and private and public sector engagement.Â Through a unique collaboration with The Brookings Institution, the Schaeffer Center has developed an effective channel to disseminate its policy analyses. Center experts are frequently cited by the media, White House, Congress, the Congressional Budget Office, the Federal Reserve Board, and other agencies.
A diverse staff of 40+ work alongside 50+ affiliated faculty to ensure the Centerâs activities are rigorous, independent, and policy-relevant. Â This includes research staff (directors, administrators, specialists), a finance team, and media and communications experts.Â The Center also supports a microsimulation group and a programmer core with access to models, methods, and an extensive data library.
The Schaeffer Center is seeking a Research Scientist to lead a portfolio of research in in artificial intelligence (AI) innovations and its health policy implications.Â The research scientist will also work on ongoing projects in precision medicine and innovations to improve cancer care.Â Successful candidates would have demonstrated leadership in developing new ideas and ability to publish in appropriate academic and practitioner outlets, excellence in managing the execution of multiple complex health care research undertakings simultaneously, worked successfully with research partners and thought leaders, demonstrated ability to successfully develop and organize a strategic research agenda, execute and manage projects on a tight timeline, and provide measurable outcomes to document the success of the research agenda. This is full-time, 2-year (renewable) fixed term position.
The position requires excellent analytical skills, experience in both technology and health policy analysis, strong written and oral communication skills, significant knowledge and experience using AI in healthcare, background in precision medicine and cancer care innovation, track record obtaining externally funded grants, and the ability to lead projects and proposals.
Serves as a key research scientist who is recognized as a national authority in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and its health policy ramifications. Plans, designs and conducts highly specialized, technical and unusually complex research projects independently. Works under consultative direction from supervisor toward long-range goals and objectives. Exercises considerable latitude in determining research objectives and approaches. Contributes to the development of advanced concepts, techniques and standards.
Conceptualizes and identifies new opportunities for research and health policy development. Pursues funding in support of new initiatives.Â
Develops solutions to wide-range of research problems of unusual complexity, which require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity and innovativeness. Creates or modifies methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Ensures solutions are consistent with research objectives.
Develops research for publication and prepares technical reports and papers that show independent thinking and leadership in scholarly writing.
Provides leadership, direction and guidance to staff and students.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence, computer sciences, engineering, information systems, or related quantitative field and have a minimum of 5 years of experience using AI in healthcare and in conducting health policy research and analyses of the implications of AI innovation.Â A background in precision medicine and cancer care innovation is also key.
Demonstrated independent thinking and leadership in scholarly writing according to such criteria as: first authored publications, conceptual leadership in the development of publications generated alone or with others, writing of first drafts of publications and/or single authored publications.
Strong institutional knowledge of the healthcare industry and policy issues.
Demonstrated record of success in grant solicitations and publishing in peer-reviewed journals is required.
