We invite applications for a grant-funded postdoctoral position to begin June 1, 2020, in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rutgers University-Newark, within a research project on theoretical foundations for machine and human learning. We specifically seek an individual with strong mathematical training and interests in foundations of probability. Interest or expertise in Optimal Transport would also be favored. The project is directed by Dr. Patrick Shafto and the individual would join the Cognitive and Data Sciences lab, a robust interdisciplinary research environment comprised of mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and behavioral scientists. The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in Mathematics. Expertise in advanced mathematical and computational techniques is required, as are strong written and oral communication skills. Responsibilities will include formalization and development of novel computational and mathematical models, formalizing questions and writing proofs, conducting simulations, and summarizing and communicating results in papers and presentations. The successful candidate will be expected to assist the PI in supervision of Masters and graduate students, and collaborate with fellow postdocs and other lab personnel. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Ph.D. or equivalent in Mathematics. Expertise in advanced mathematical and computational techniques is required, as are strong written and oral communication skills.
