The Education Technology (EdTech) team within the Digital Learning & Innovation (DL&I) office is searching for a Data Modeler and Developer. Under the general direction of the Director of Educational Technology, the Data Modeler and Developer provides hands-on design and development of data and analytics solutions; This individual serves as the technical lead for data application development on the EdTech team.
The position manages technical delivery throughout the full cycle of data analytics projects; works with campus business end users to determine functional report requirements, writes technical specifications based on user requirements, and designs, develops, tests and maintains reports and dashboards using the appropriate tools; designs and implements data & analytics solutions. Works closely with the relevant DL&I units; plans and coordinates technical aspects of release and maintenance of data and analytics products. In close consultation with the Ed Tech Director, identifies, recommends and promotes utilization of the appropriate reporting tools (e.g., MicroStrategy, PowerBI, Tableau); contributes to the development of the analytics strategic plan, setting of goals and priorities based on the DL& I vision and campus initiatives. The position serves as a data architect to enable integration of data from varied data sources, including learning management systems (edX), student information system, and other institutional applications to produce reports and dashboards in support of organizational needs; serves as a liaison with user areas to understand their analytics and reporting needs.
The position plays a key role in all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle processes. Responsible for implementation of system enhancements that will directly benefit students, faculty, and staff; prepares or approves detailed specifications for approved modifications, reviews and evaluates testing results for completeness and accuracy, and reviews user documentation produced in support of the DL&I applications. Works in a fast paced, team environment with multiple deadlines; Performs other duties as assigned.
B.S. / M.S. / Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Operations Research or equivalent experience. Master's degree is required but additional on the job experience may substitute for the MS degree. Minimum Four or more years of hands-on ETL experience using tools such as Data Stage, Informatica or ODI. Four or more years of SQL writing experience and database programming. Experience with RDBMS such as Oracle, SQL Server, or similar databases. Strong knowledge of Data Warehousing concepts; data validation, testing, and support activities.
Knowledge of higher education data, HR data is a plus. Familiarity with academic technologies, especially with edX data, is essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Highly self-motivated; team-player with positive 'can do' attitude.
Extensive experience troubleshooting issues at the Report, RPD, BI Server and Oracle Database level; PowerBI and SAP HANNA administration (manages web catalog objects, archive/unarchive, set permissions and ownership, start/stop server, deploy RPD, etc.); experienced in RPD development, including the design and creation of dimensions, hierarchies, and logical data sources, etc.; experience developing and conducting performance tuning on RPD layer (Physical, Business Model mapping and Presentation Layers ); experience with Report metadata analysis and modeling, such as OBIEE RPD; experience performing data validation on enterprise reports; Knowledge of DataStage ETL tool and EPM data warehouse. Extensive knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) in operational and data warehouse environments including tuning skills; dimensional data modeling experience; experience in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments. In depth knowledge of Power BI, Tableau and other dashboard publishing software.
Must possess energy and enthusiasm to lead analytics projects; excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong questioning and listening skills and ability to look beyond obvious answers and understand the impact on other areas is required; out-of-the-box thinking; strong analytical and organizational skills; Knowledge of higher education practices; exposure to application services lifecycle, including systems design, specification, development, data transformation, and migration, unit and integrated testing, implementation and post live application support.
