The selected individual will isolate zoosporic fungi from the rumen using anaerobic culturing techniques and genetically-modify them using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The goal is to understand the cell biology of zoosporic fungi and study their role in the rumen. S/he will use anaerobic gas chambers, microscopy, standard cloning techniques, PCR/DNA sequencing to validate transformants. S/he will be trained in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation by the Buchler lab.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Use molecular biology (PCR, cloning, transformation, genetics) to make strains
Isolate and grow zoosporic fungi in anaerobic conditions.
Grow Agrobacterium in anaerobic conditions.
Transform zoosporic fungi using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in anaerobic conditions.
Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results from assays.
Prepare presentation summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses.
Utilize good laboratory practice including record keeping and lab maintenance.
Contribute to grant writing and manuscript preparation, writing, editing, and authorship.
May be required to perform other duties as business needs dictate.
Disseminate results by assisting in writing manuscripts, presenting at conferences, and presenting at local group meetings and seminars. Assist in the development of research projects and writing new grant proposals. Training of undergraduate and graduate students. Assist with managing lab safety protocols.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Must have a DVM and experience with microbiology, or PhD in Biology, Bioengineering, Genetics, Microbiology, Cell Biology or related field.
Essential skills are the ability to perform light microscopy, basic microbiology (culturing, aseptic technique), molecular biology (PCR, cloning). Candidates with research experience in fungal genetics, cell biology, cell cycle regulation, metabolism and/or mathematical modeling are strongly encouraged to apply.
