Location: Bowling Green, KY Category: Faculty Posted On: Tue Oct 15 2019 Job Description:
The Department of Music at Western Kentucky University seeks applicants for the position of Associate Director of Bands/Pedagogical Assistant Professor of Music. A pedagogical faculty member is a full-time, tenure-eligible, faculty member engaged primarily in instructional activities. Pedagogical faculty members are expected to bring a high level of conceptual and theoretical ideas to their instructional tasks and to have innovative skill sets that enhance the intellectual development of their colleagues and the students with whom they interact. Pedagogical faculty do not, however, carry an expectation of involvement in scholarly research. In recognition of this, such pedagogical faculty members will normally have a teaching load higher than that of tenure-eligible faculty members in their unit who carry responsibilities in both teaching and research.
The Associate Director of Bands must work collaboratively with the Director of Bands in the administration of the university band program. Specific responsibilities include directing the athletic bands including the 280-member Big Red Marching Band and the men's basketball pep band, supervising the women's basketball and volleyball pep bands, conducting the Symphonic Band in the spring semester, teaching Marching Band Techniques and other music education courses based on qualifications and departmental needs, supervising instrumental student teachers, recruiting on and off campus, and active involvement with outreach efforts to public school band programs throughout the region.
Earned doctorate in music at the time of the appointment.
Minimum three years of success directing a public school band program including concert and marching bands.
Strong desire to work with collegiate athletic bands. The ideal candidate will value the role of athletic bands within a large NCAA Division I University, and possess a genuine enthusiasm about contributing to that role.
Strong leadership and administrative skills.
Ability to create marching band drill using computer assisted design software.
Knowledge of contemporary trends with collegiate and high school marching bands.
