The VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and the University of Washington (UW) Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, and the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences are seeking a Director of Employee Occupational Health Services (EOHS) staff physician based at the VAPSHCS (Seattle). This individual will oversee and administrate the Employee Occupational Health Program for the VAPSHCS, one of the largest and most complex VA hospital systems in the country. The EOHS of the Puget Sound HCS has responsibility for the work-related health and safety of a working population of about 5000 employees in two large facilities and three outpatient clinics spread across Western Washington. The VAPSHCS Employee Occupational Health office serves this population by providing acute workplace injury and illness care, contact and exposure investigations, pre-placement exams, vaccination services, surveillance programs and wellness guidance. The Director of EOHS will function in a clinical role by providing direct clinical care and will also supervise advanced registered nurse practitioners, nurses and clerks who provide acute and preventive clinical services to the PSHCS employees.
This position will also hold a full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor level (without tenure due to funding) on the clinician-teacher pathway in the UW Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and an adjunct appointment in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. The VAPSHCS EOH program is home to an occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) residency rotation and the Director will be expected to participate in the training of UW OEM residents rotating through this position and have opportunities to participate in resident didactics and resident research and quality improvement project mentorship. The VAPSHCS is known for cutting edge research and the successful candidate will be expected to obtain competitive funding and conduct research in an area related to occupational health and safety. Affiliation with the University of Washington research establishment is expected. This position would have an annual service period of 12 months [July 1-June 30]. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The anticipated start date would be July 1, 2020.
Relocation/Retention Incentives may be authorized for eligible applicants and will be determined based on difficulty to fill.
Requirements include an M.D. or D.O. degree (or foreign equivalent) and Occupational Medicine board eligibility/certification (or foreign equivalent). Any U.S. Citizen may apply. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
The successful candidate should have education and/or demonstrated experience in areas of Occupational Medicine, including occupational disease and injury management and worker compensation systems. They should be versed in epidemiology, preventive medicine, industrial hygiene and legal and regulatory requirements in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Candidates must demonstrate a record of peer reviewed research publications.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate competency in acute care of the injuries, infections and exposures which occur regularly among health care providers and an understanding of the work place and potential health risks in health care settings.
