Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of experience in the electrical trade under a skilled journey-level tradesperson, which includes training equivalent to that given in a two year applied skilled electrical traineeship or an apprenticeship. Training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Candidate must be able to perform physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED. Maintenance experience with electrical systems in a large commercial or institutional setting.
Brief Descriptions of Duties: The Trades Specialist - Electrician will be responsible for performing journey level maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, installation and repair of campus electrical systems. As a Trades Specialist - Electrician you need to be physically able to work from ladders, scaffold, man-lifts and boom trucks. Able to work outside in all weather conditions. Respond to campus electrical outages during the off hours. Duties to include the following:
Inspect electrical systems and equipment to identify hazards, defects, and the need for repair, and to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code. Locates and determines electrical malfunction using test instruments such as ammeter, volt meter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope, etc. Plans new or modified installations consistent with specification and electrical codes.
Must consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of the University assets and employees.
Plan, layout, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. Inspect, maintain, and repair various types of indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, 120 volt to 277 volt. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.
Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures using a test device such as a multi meter. Ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments.
Understanding and proficient in safe work practices including LOTO (lockout / Tag out), fall protection, and personal protection equipment.
Install conduit, junction boxes and all other electrical hardware necessary for conductor distribution. Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels.
Install, repair and maintain motors, circuit breakers, and other electrical equipment. Repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electric components or electrical equipment and controls, using standard tools, gauges and procedures.
Prepare sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment. Assign work to Maintenance Assistants and/or Facilities Operations Assistants. Observe and inspect the work while in progress and when completed to ensure that the job is done properly and that electrical codes are followed. Ability read and understand drawings, and campus standards. Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and NFPA-70E.
Make adjustment to electrical equipment. Test, adjust, calibrates and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, electrical equipment and electric motors.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference..
