RIT GEAR UP is a federally funded, grant-based initiative that aims to increase the high school graduation rate and post-secondary success for youth in the City of Rochester. An initiative of the RIT K-12 University Center, RIT GEAR UP serves a cohort of 1600 youth in the graduating class of 2020 (current sophomores) with counseling, mentoring, educational enrichment, skill-building workshops, college readiness, leadership development, college visits, and parent support programs.
The GEAR UP Outreach Specialist, serving as a site-based coordinator for RIT GEAR UP, will implement program services to a caseload of youth at several partner schools in the City of Rochester. He/she will be responsible for recruiting new program members and maintaining the engagement of enrolled participants. The Outreach Specialist will design and deliver programming in alignment with grant objectives.
The Outreach Specialist will become the key GEAR UP representative at the schools in which he/she is assigned. He/she will keep accurate and up-to-date records of student services. In addition to work in the schools, the GEAR UP Outreach Specialist will provide support to program-wide events over school breaks and during the summer. Some evenings, Saturdays, and overnights are required.
The GEAR UP Outreach Specialist will report to the RIT GEAR UP Director of Student and Academic Affairs. The position is based in the assigned schools during the academic year and at RIT during the summer. Regular travel between service sites may be required. The successful candidate will be able to work independently on-site in the schools while maintaining a connection and alignment with the central administration of RIT GEAR UP. 20 hours per week.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Manage caseload of students at assigned schools in alignment with grant objectives. Provide counseling, mentorship, and advisement to students.
Design and plan for workshops, field trips and other academic and social/emotional enrichment services. Participate in site-coordinators planning meetings and professional development.
Implement workshops, tutoring program and other academic and social/emotional enrichment services to participants in alignment with grant objectives.
Recruit new students to program, recruit current students to participate in program events and initiatives.
Maintain documentation of all program services following approved procedures. Assist with collection of student data as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
1 year of experience in education of middle or high school students from at-risk and/or historically underserved and underrepresented groups.
Knowledge of NYS high school graduation requirements and high school academic standards.
Experience in drop-out prevention and in addressing challenges faced by RCSD high school youth
Knowledge of college readiness curriculums, including soft skill and middle skill development.
Experience in the design and delivery of K-12 programming
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; must be adept at communicating with audiences of all backgrounds and education levels.

Preferred Education, Experience or Specialized Skills
Experience working in the RCSD and/or Rochester Charter Schools preferred
Experience with K-12 outreach and/or grant programs preferred
Event planning experience preferred
Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
Bachelor's degree in Education, Youth Development, Social Work or a STEM field preferred
Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Youth Development or a STEM field preferred
