Job Summary: The Research Technologist 3 participates in design and execution of research lab projects. Conducts experimental tests and procedures and processes and analyzes data. Reviews and revises existing research methodologies and may develop new methodologies, mathematical and/or computer models for predicting data. May ensure overall lab compliance with all associated rules and regulations. This position is available in a breast cancer research lab (Dai Horiuchi, Principal Investigator) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago. The primary focus of the lab is to study the mechanisms of tumor progression in breast cancer and to identify novel targeted treatment strategies. To achieve these goals, we utilize a collection of human breast cancer cell lines, preclinical animal models, primary tumor organoids ex vivo, and high-throughput screening approaches along with state-of-the-art bioinformatics through collaboration with experts in the field. We are determined to help bring basic laboratory findings to clinical testing, and our research involves dynamic interactions with clinicians here at Northwestern Medicine and industry partners. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher who is passionate about the concept of “personalized medicine.” Prior training in (breast) cancer research involving rodent animal models (e.g., transgenic/syngeneic/PDX) is a must for this position. A solid understanding of fundamental gene expression and statistical analysis methods is required. Also essential is an ability to communicate with others effectively and efficiently as this position requires constant communication with our collaborators on and off campus including industry partners. This position is most suitable for an individual who is capable of functioning in a fast-paced environment independently with minimum guidance, and who wishes to embark on a career in pharmaceutical research in the future.
Following overall research objectives, independently designs, plans, conducts and troubleshoots experiments.
Evaluates protocols and data obtained from groups of experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve quality and validity of results based upon overall project objectives.
Using an advanced level of skill, completes the following activities:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
Observes experiments, collects, records, summarizes, analyzes and interprets research data.
Collates relevant mathematical results.
Prepares complex tables reflecting relationships of multiple tests.
Draws scientific conclusions.
Writes portions of grant applications.
Co-authors scientific papers.
Negotiates purchases with vendors.
Maintains and updates portions of grant budgets.
Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses.
Verifies accuracy of invoices.
Orders and/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice and/or lab supplies.
Completes other duties as assigned
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required; OR
Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year lab/bench or other relevant experience.
