The Materials Analysis Research Laboratory (MARL) in the Department of Biotechnology at Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for an Instrument Scientist (Assistant Scientist I or II). This position is responsible for operation and support of x-ray diffraction and scattering equipment within MARL which includes a powder diffractometer and a small angle scattering system. The lab also houses a scanning electron microscope with x-ray analyzer, an x-ray photoelectron spectrometer, thermal analyzers (TGA and SDT) and an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Â
Work is split between training clients (mostly graduate students) to use the equipment on their own and performing the characterization, including both chemical and physical analyses, for them. Therefore the successful candidate is expected to have a broad knowledge of the possible techniques and able to choose the appropriate technique for the issue at hand.
The Instrument Scientist will serve laboratory clients from both engineering and the physical sciences. Clients are primarily campus stakeholders, Â but also include the Iowa Department of Transportation and several industrial clients. Collegiality and a sense of collaboration are beneficial. This role first involves supporting others in their research. It may expand into personal research as time permits.
In addition to being able to complete the duties above, the successful candidate will have excelling time management, project management, and communication skills.
Minimum qualifications required to be considered for the Assistant Scientist II:
Bachelorâs degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Masterâs degree and 2 years of related experience.
