The Office of Biotechnology at Iowa State University seeks an Associate Scientist to Manage the Cryo-electron Microscopy Facility. The Office of Biotechnology facilitates and advances programs in research, education, and outreach that contribute to the goals of Iowa State Universityâs Strategic Plan in the area of Structural Biology.
The Manager of the Cryo-electron microscopy Facility is responsible for oversight of the Iowa State University Cryo-EM facility, including operation and routine maintenance of the Thermo Fisher Glacios microscope, Gatan K3 detector and Thermo Fisher Vitrobot. The incumbent will manage the instrumentation and is solely responsible for microscope alignment and sample loading. The incumbent will develop a work flow for the facility, including grid preparation, data collection and analysis. The incumbent will also be responsible for training users in grid preparation, data collection and analysis, including training in usage of single-particle cryo-EM software. The incumbent will arrange service visits from field service engineers when required for maintenance.
The incumbent oversees all internal business aspects of the facility, including budget development, participating in price (rate) structure determination for facility services, instrument scheduling, accounting, and client billing. The managerâs customer relations duties include addressing client concerns and providing consultation to clients. The incumbentâs scholarly duties include serving as senior personnel on researchersâ grants; and writing and co-authoring manuscripts, book chapters, and research reports for granting agencies. The incumbent is responsible for training and mentoring students and visiting scientists in single-particle cryo-EM data collection and analysis and for developing content, planning, and teaching cryo-EM courses and workshops, as requested.
The successful candidate will have superior organization skills in order to manage multiple, interrelated tasks. The candidate will also possess skills to communicate and work effectively with researchers at all levels (both on- and off-campus) and equipment service personnel. They will have a meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to think autonomously, critically, and creatively. They also shall have the ability to learn new skills as the technologies advance.
