Job Description Summary
Provide local computing support in the School of Arts and Sciences, helping faculty, staff, and students to make effective use of technology in all aspects of their research, teaching, and administrative roles. This position will maintain secure, reliable systems and help further program goals through creative use of information technology. It will also support scholarly research by aiding in the design, development, and maintenance of the technological components of faculty research projects, and help with maintenance of departmental websites.
Penn's School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is world-renowned for exceptional faculty, innovative research, and top-tier degree programs. SAS Computing is seeking an Information Technology Support Specialist to provide excellent technological support and creative IT solutions that will further the research and teaching missions of the school. Desktop support is one of the primary responsibilities of the position. It involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting faculty and staff computers in a mixed Mac/PC/Linux environment. The successful candidate will also be comfortable configuring a variety of mobile devices, including iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. They will assist faculty with classroom and lab technology. The IT Support Specialist will provide first-line assistance for departmental, faculty, and project-based websites. Experience with Drupal and WordPress is desirable. A good working knowledge of PC and Mac hardware will be necessary. A strong commitment to information security is required; experience with encryption is desirable. A key responsibility of this position is working with faculty and staff to identify creative IT solutions that forward the research, teaching, and administration of the departments of Math, Physics, and Astronomy. The successful candidate will listen well to the needs of clients, and propose innovative and maintainable methods of accomplishing those goals. They are capable of supporting clients with a wide variety of technical abilities and comfort levels from novice to expert. The ideal candidate is comfortable in a busy and highly collaborative environment, and provides clear and frequent communication to both colleagues and clients. As a member of the School of Arts & Sciences Computing group, the IT Support Specialist will assure that all activities are consistent with institutional standards and will participate in School-wide technology initiatives.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. BA/BS and one to three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Excellent customer service and spoken/written communication skills required; flexible work schedule may be required occasionally.
Familiarity with basic desktop hardware and maintenance required.
Familiarity with popular web browsers and mail applications, basic computer networking concepts, basic Active Directory usage, and anti-virus software required.
Experience supporting Mac OS X and Windows 7 is required, Linux experience is desirable.
Experience with encryption desirable. Experience with HTML/CSS and content management systems, especially Drupal and WordPress, is desirable.
