Candidate is expected to continue in the development of technical expertise and knowledge related to data science, programming, machine learning, review the recent literature, and implement new techniques under supervision.Supervisor will select techniques and procedures to be applied and the candidate will receive supervision on new aspects of assignments. Candidate will be performing routine scientific work and will apply standardized scientific procedures to assignments with clear specific objectives.Purpose of the Research Project: Advanced data manipulation for machine learning for Big Data in OphthalmologyDuties will include: computer programming, data visualization, imaging analyses.This is an advanced level of research position. The research scientist is expected to demonstrate initiatives and abilities to trouble shoot independently under limited supervision.*Collaborate with other team members to accomplish organizational goals and to learn new approaches and tasks while working under limited supervision*Be in charge of multiple projects from start to finish*Review literature and recent advances in machine learning, data science, computer vision, and related research in ophthalmology*Extract EMR or other associated big data such as claims or imaging data in appropriate format*Analyze data and assist with troubleshooting and daily quality control of data*Data munging tasks to reshape data for statistical analyses, data visualization, and machine learning*Data backup and basic computer hardware maintenance.*Writing research manuscripts, reports, reviews and summaries*Presenting data and results at meetingsRequirements:*Master's Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field AND 3 to 5 years of work experience in a related field*Computer skills including: Java, SQL, Python, Torch, Lua, Linux*Experience working in headless server environments.*Desire to learn novel computational techniques and understanding of scaling processes.*Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Powerpoint and Excel*Flexibility to learn new technologies, APIs, and SDKs by reading documentation.*Must have strong determination and a logical and independent mind to complete each project*Must have very strong organizational abilities and experience in team focused work environment with excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills*Ability to multitask and participate in different projects*Ability to solve well defined problems using accepted methods and techniques*Must comply with NIH, Federal, state and University regulations on the safe and ethical use of animals and humans in research *Perform related duties as required.Application Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
