Summary of Position: This individual would be a research assistant working directly with Professor David Tilman. As such, the individual would do extensive literature searches to find and preliminarily evaluate the existing scientific information on a wide range of topics of relevance to Tilman’s research. The individual would also assist with preparing papers for publication by performing such tasks as creating figures and references lists, and formatting papers as required by specific journals, and, as listed below, contribution to research in other ways.
Essential and Other Functions: 60% Literature searches and synthesis: Help with searches of the scientific literature related to topics proposed by the supervisor, providing a summary of the findings and with PDF’s of the relevant publications
20% Data Discovery and Assembly Find and gather requested data from published sources and on-line data sets and assemble data into Excel spreadsheets for analysis
20% Clerical/technical assistance Produce publication-quality graphics, reference lists, and tables for manuscript. Format scientific manuscript so as to follow requirements of specific journals. Assist with organizational and other clerical tasks as needed
Essential Qualifications BS in Biology or Ecology or similar discipline
Preferred Qualifications: Experience writing an undergraduate research paper or undergraduate “thesis” such as an honors thesis, and a desire to gain skills to allow one to better pursue a Ph. D.
