Inova Schar Cancer Institute (ISCI) is seeking a Proton Physicist Assistant in Fairfax Virginia. This position is also open to the medical physicist students who plan to attend the next-year residency match. The assistant is responsible for assisting the Medical Physics team with routine tasks, including routine patient quality assurance tests. All work will be completed under the supervision of a Medical Physicist.
ISCI is an international center for advanced cancer care and research, serving Northern Virginia, Washington DC metro area, and the world beyond. The radiation oncology department started treating patient in the spring of 2019 with conventional radiotherapy in the all new facility. Conventional radiotherapy treatments are delivered using two Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, one Varian Trilogy linear accelerator equipped with CBCT, one Accuray CyberKnife and brachytherapy. ISCI will start treating patients with image-guided proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) therapy using an IBA Proton Therapy System with two treatment gantries January of 2020. The commissioning of the proton system will start in November 2019.
Executes routine quality assurance tests of proton and x-ray beam characteristics
Tests mechanical characteristics of therapy and imaging equipment
Collects quality assurance data by utilizing various radiation detectors (such as Matrixx ion chambers, Zebra, etc.)
Keeps accurate records of data and documentation acquired and presents to Medical Physics team as needed
Performs other duties as needed to support Medical Physics department
Bachelor’s Degree in physics, or engineering field from an accredited university is required
Must be motivated with a strong worth ethic, be detail oriented, and have systematic thinking approach
Strong communication skills – both orally and in writing are required
Availability to work outside of normal business hours (nights and weekends). Shifts in working days may start from 2:00 PM or later.
Knowledge of Python scripting is preferred
Aria is used for record and verify and for patient scheduling and billing. Dosimetry is a paperless department. RayStation TPS is used for proton, photon, and electron planning. Accuray Precision TPS is used for CyberKnife planning.
