General Purpose Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and participates in the design, construction and provision of costumes for college theater and dance productions; manages the costume inventory and catalogue, including cleaning, repair and recycling of costumes; and performs related duties as assigned.

Plans, organizes, coordinates and integrates work of the costume shop; oversees and participates in developing, implementing and evaluating plans, work processes, systems and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards; contributes to the development of and monitors performance against the annual department budget; recommends purchases and other expenditures in accordance with District policies and procedures; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports. . Provides input in selecting, training and providing day-to-day work guidance and direction to student aides and other assigned staff; assigns, schedules and monitors work for completeness, accuracy and conformance with District, department and legal/regulatory requirements and standards; monitors workflow to ensure that mandated deadlines are being met in an optimal manner; provides information, instruction and training on work procedures and technical/legal/regulatory requirements. . Provides input to manager on employee work performance and behaviors; assists in ensuring a fair, open and inclusive work environment in accordance with the District's mission, goals and values. . Plans, organizes and manages the costume shop, responsible for providing costumes for college theater and dance productions; manages the organization and cleanliness of the costume shop and costume storage areas; works with directors, designers and others to determine costuming needs, production timelines and costume selection/production requirements; participates in the design of costumes and recycling and modification of existing costumes to need requirements; maintains the costume inventory and catalogue; checks costumes in/out for college productions and for use by other authorized area institutions; oversees and participates in the cleaning, ironing and repair of costumes. . Participates in and oversees the work of student aides involved in construction and fabrication of costumes to meet production needs and deadlines; may draw and cut patterns; determines appropriate fabrication and tailoring methods; prepares and submits purchase requisitions for required fabrics, notions and other supplies; oversees and participates in the sewing and tailoring process; coordinates and participates in costume fittings for performers and makes costume modifications as required; attends dress rehearsals and notes costume adjustments required for performance use. . Performs a variety of technical, logistical and instructional support activities for one or more instructors in one or more classroom and costume design and fabrication laboratory settings; assists instructors in formulating skills development projects and assignments for use in skills laboratories and develops materials for implementation of laboratory projects; may develop lab sheets and other supporting materials and resources for student use. . Preps for, sets up and dismantles equipment for demonstrations and labs; fabricates items required for laboratory demonstrations and student projects, based on instructor diagrams and oral instructions; demonstrates and trains students on work methods and uses and operations of sewing machines and other costume shop equipment and tools; demonstrates and trains students and student aides on shop safety practices and procedures; monitors student attendance in the lab; enters data in systems such as SARS and runs reports for distribution and review. . Maintains and performs minor repairs on shop equipment such as sewing machines, steamers, industrial and other irons, washers and dryers and other equipment; submits requests for major equipment repair or replacement. . Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.
OTHER DUTIES . Represents the District on local and statewide professional organizations and committees. . Performs related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities to: . Oversee and participate in the construction and alteration of costumes to meet theater and dance production requirements and deadlines, coordinating schedules and fittings with instructors, designers and others. . Design costumes from sketches and take direction and creative criticism to refine costumes incorporating feedback. . Expertly operate sewing machines using sergers and multiple stitching types. . Use and demonstrate alternation and tailoring techniques applicable to different types and weights of fabric and trim. . Manage and maintain the District's costume inventory. . Provide effective hands-on demonstrations, instructions, tutoring and guidance to students in costume patterning, sewing and tailoring techniques; accurately, thoroughly and clearly answer students' subject-matter, equipment-use and technology questions. . Plan, organize, coordinate, assign and review and evaluate the work of assigned student aides and assistants. . Analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend or adopt effective courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures. . Set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility. . Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures. . EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Completion of: an associate degree or certificate program in costume design, fashion design or a closely related field and at least two years of progressively responsible experience in costume design and construction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.

Employees work in a theater, costume shop and instructional laboratory environment where the noise level is frequently loud. Employees must work with a variety of costume shop power equipment and may be exposed to fumes and airborne particles. Employees may work in the evenings and on weekends during rehearsals and performances.
Employees may be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site and to adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work overtime.

APPLICATION REVIEW AND ASSESSMENTS The application review process includes an evaluation of training and experience based on given application information and answers to supplemental questionnaire. Only the most qualified applicants, who pass the minimum qualifications review, will be invited to the assessment process.
The assessment process will also include an online competency assessment (40% weight) and a performanceassessment (60% weight). Of those achieving a passing score on the competency exam, only the 15 highest scoring candidates, plus ties, will be invited to the performance assessment. ELIGIBILITYLIST Candidates who attain a passing score on each part of the assessment will be placed in rank order on district wide Open-Competitive List. Using the same process, a separate Promotional List will be established and both Lists will be used concurrently. Unless otherwise indicated, the eligibility list will be used to fill current part-time vacancies in this classification at Fresno City College for at least six months.
