The Division of Undergraduate Studies, in the College of Letters and Science, serves students at every stage of their undergraduate careers, from the initial years of intellectual exploration through the process of finding and pursuing an in-depth academic focus. Undergraduate Studies is a center for innovations in undergraduate education that extend beyond traditional departmental boundaries. Our major and minor programs attract undergraduates who wish to explore the most intellectually engaging and promising interdisciplinary fields under the direction of scholars who are pioneers in charting these new areas and methods of inquiry. The Office of Undergraduate Advising serves the 23,000 undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science.
Provides highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of programs, policies and initiatives and provides in-depth, complex analyses as a specialist in the field of curriculum and related data:
Selects the most appropriate data sources (including Cal Answers dashboards and ad hoc queries, custom data sets from the admissions office, Campus Solutions, and responses to surveys designed by the incumbent), tools, and methods to independently design and conduct a wide range of analyses and clearly communicate findings to a variety of audiences (deans, chairs, committees, faculty, staff).
Develops and advocates solutions to college- and campus-wide curricular issues, including identifying and easing curricular bottlenecks, maximizing access to key segments of the curriculum, to ensure student throughput (time to degree).
Provides analytical support and recommendations for the creation of new curricula and new and revised curricular requirements to improve the undergraduate student educational experience and bring it in line with 21st century academic and workforce needs.
Provides analyses for complex academic, data, systems, space usage and resource projects working directly with all levels of managers, deans and the L&S Executive Committee.
Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization, including potential changes to the structure of the division and of undergraduate education on campus.
Synthesizes complex issues and presents them so that the takeaways are clear to an array of audiences with varying degrees of technical/numerical savvy:
Leads and directs a wide variety of projects and follows through with all levels of staff and individuals inside and outside the Division.
Guides and directs curriculum planning (enrollment and instruction) with senior campus management and faculty
Develops and coordinates policy communications; formulates strategies for education based on historic problems and other identified areas for improvement
Proposes, leads and/or participates on policy and planning committees and working groups. Researches and summarizes best practices in field. Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge or ability to master campus processes, protocols and procedures, specifically those related to the curriculum and student policies.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge or ability to master common campus-specific computer applications, such as Cal Answers and Campus Solutions.
Advanced skills or ability to learn how to access Enterprise Data Warehouse data using Cal Answers Ad Hoc Queries
Advanced skills with analytical and data visualization software such as Excel, Python, SAS or similar and ability to learn new tools as required.
Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
Strong statistical skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with and make presentations to all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
Mid-level project management skills.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Experience independently designing, managing, and reporting complex data projects.
Experience with a high level of statistical analysis.
