Essential Job Duties:
The postdoctoral research scholar will be responsible for evaluating the microbial community structure and transcriptome of the rhizosphere and rhizome of several new miscanthus varieties using next-generation sequencing methods. The person will perform (1) field collections, (2) Illumina library preparation and data analysis, and (3) manuscript, poster and oral presentation preparation describing project results. The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Grunden to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring
The postdoc will also be expected to operate a motor vehicle and perform work outdoors in all weather conditions as part of essential job functions. The postdoc will need to travel off-site alone for research and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, ecology, microbiology, plant pathology, or a related field.
Experience working with plant microbiomes, including fieldwork, culture collections, molecular analysis, and associated bioinformatics and statistics.
Strong technical skills in ecological and microbial sciences.
Excellent record-keeping, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong work ethic and integrity.
Ability to multi-task and work independently.
Ability to work as part of a team that includes diverse people from different cultures.
Evidence of prior successful development of collaborative research projects and publication of results.
Minimum of 4 years of experience with plant microbiomes.
Previous work in agricultural ecosystems.
Proficient verbal and written communication.
Experience generating and analyzing next-generation sequence data.
Required license or certification:
Valid NC Driver’s License of the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
