Tuberculosis has been a major global health concern for well over a century. Although many potential treatments have been vigorously pursued, conventional strategies have failed to eradicate TB infection and, in fact, the global threat has grown over the last couple decades, potentially stemming from the fact that treatment attempts have neglected to take into account the deeply integrated, symbiotic-like relationship between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its host that has developed over 40,000 years of human/bacterial co-evolution.
The Cox Lab (housed in the UC Berkeley MCB Department) aims to understand the key mechanisms that dictate the M. tuberculosis-human relationship with the goal of breaking these ties, targeting either host or pathogen factors to eliminate M. tuberculosis infection and use that knowledge to contribute to solving a steadily increasing threat in global health.
Setup, establish and maintain recharge center for BSL3 laboratories with operations in compliance with policies and procedures from Office of CFO; establish a recharge rate to accurately reflect the goods and services provided; perform necessary ongoing duties of recharge center manager to maintain recharge center operations
Provide complete training and testing to new researchers to work safely in the BSL3 laboratories; provide supervision and instruction to new BSL3 users with new techniques and use of equipments in compliance with safe BSL3 practices
Organize and maintain laboratory inventories; routinely checking supply stocks to determine inventory levels and estimate necessary consumable supplies to maintain smooth uninterrupted laboratory operations
Ensure laboratory equipment undergo routine scheduled maintenance in order to remain in good working order; organize and facilitate scheduled maintenance of equipment and facilities
Provide technical guidance and support with large scale experiments, including in vivo infections and subsequent procedures such as harvesting infected tissues for necropsy, enumeration of bacterial burden and other downstream assays
Function as the liaison between Office of Environmental, Health & Safety and BSL3 users
Perform independent scientific research investigating the basic biology of interactions between the bacterial pathogen M. tuberculosis and mammalian host
Carry out a broad range of techniques such as cell culture, isolation of primary cells, molecular and cell biology, in vivo and ex vivo infection with M. tuberculosis
Manage the lab's Animal Use Protocol (AUP) and Biological Use Authorization (BUA), leading the development and updating necessary amendments to be aligned with current lab needs to ensure the lab's overall success; serve as the primary point of contact with Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC)
Instruct and train new lab members with basic handling, care and breeding of mice along with practices related to mice; supervise staff and undergraduates responsible for the lab's mouse colony and interface with Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC) for the animals' health and welfare Required Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years experience in a research laboratory setting
Minimum of 5 years experience working in a high containment facility with pathogens (Biosafety Level 3 facility)
Broad range of techniques such as cell culture, isolation of primary cells, molecular and cell biology
Experience maintaining laboratory mouse colony
Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work independently and on teams
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Bachelor's Degree in relevant biological science or equivalent experience/training Preferred Qualifications
In-depth knowledge and handling of pathogenic M. tuberculosis
Experience with pathogenic bacterial infections in vivo and ex vivo
