DEPARTMENT: Laboratory Medicine - Surgical Pathology

WORK TYPE: Full Time
Assists the Pathologist and Pathologist's Assistant in the gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens in Surgical Pathology.
Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
Works under the general supervision of the Pathologist's Assistant/Surgical Pathology Coordinator, and the administrative direction of the Supervisor, Anatomic Pathology and/or Operations Director for Anatomic
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrates effective organizational and communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Individual must qualify as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.
The minimum training/experience required to qualify for high complexity testing under CLIA is the following:
1. Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology required
2. Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. The education must include 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours in biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Prior participation in a one year on the job training program in a hospital setting is preferred. Prior experience preferred.
If experienced, requires up to three months on the job training to reach acceptable levels of performance. Without experience, requires a minimum of one year on the job training.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands: Subject to exposure to infectious diseases. Handles hazardous chemicals. Must be able to lift and pour containers of reagents. Must pass standardized color vision test.
Protective equipment (as required by test performed): eye protection, face protection, lab coat, nonsterile medical gloves.
