The Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) group operates and supports all specialized teaching labs in the Baskin School of Engineering. BELS is also the hardware engineering, embedded software engineering, and technical support services for the Baskin School of Engineering and at times for University of California, Santa Cruz. BELS schedules services and operates the specialized undergraduate engineering teaching labs at the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) and partners with UCSC Information Technology Services (ITS) Instructional technologies group on the use of campus general computing labs. BELS instructional labs are primarily located in the Baskin Engineering and Engineering 2 buildings, but at times BELS supports instructional requirements at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus and research requirements at other main campus buildings and locations such as 2300 Delaware Research Park. BELS also provides technical advice, design, fabrication, poster printing, 3D-printing services and equipment rentals to undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and faculty sometimes via recharge or miscellaneous fee reimbursement. BELS operates the BSOE receiving services and serves as the inventorial equipment manager to the Baskin School of Engineering. BELS provides support for audio-visual equipment in the BSOE events center rooms and partners with ITS Local IT Specialists (BSOE LITS) on supporting computing and conference room audio-visual equipment support
Under the general direction of the BELS Manager, the incumbent is responsible for daily maintenance of the instructional laboratories of the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) and provides support to instructors and teaching assistants using them. This position also sources, compiles and distributes lab course materials for the students taking lab courses using these labs. The position provides Computer Aided Design (CAD) support to personnel within BSOE. This position also assists in operating the BSOE electronics stockroom, BSOE poster printing system and provides backup duties to shipping, receiving and BSOE facilities support as needed.
