A post-doctoral research position is available at Rutgers University in the field of solar driven electrocatalysis for production of renewable fuels. The goal of this project is to design and fabricate high efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells that are potentially capable of generating hydrogen from water and sunlight at a massive scale (enabling the hydrogen economy to be realized). The successful candidate for this position will work on a team project co-directed by Profs. Eric Garfunkel and G. Charles Dismukes. The project is currently funded by the Department of Energy.
An immediate need is for a scientist to join and help lead a team to fabricate and characterize thin-film inorganic catalysts on semiconductors for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water.
Essential background knowledge of the successful candidate should include solid-state synthesis, thin-film fabrication and a solid understanding physical, chemical, electrochemical and optical properties of materials and interfaces. Some of the tools to be used will include x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Additional experience in photo-electrochemistry is required. Optical experience would also greatly benefit the project. The successful applicant will lead a team of undergraduate and graduate students in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. External collaboration on this project involves National Renewable Energy Laboratory and other leading PEC laboratories.
This opportunity is available for a highly motivated candidate with a strong publication records. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable based on mutual agreement. The position is open until filled.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of electrochemistry, optoelectronics, thin film fabrication, photovoltaics, surface science, nanoscience, electron microscopy, semiconductor science, device fabrication and catalysis.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The candidate must be able to work in a sophisticated set of laboratories that involve extensive electronics, ultrahigh vacuum, electrochemical, and chemical instrumentation.
