The Institute of Health Informatics (IHI) in the University of Minnesota is seeking a programmer/data scientist to join a team working on multiple research projects in the field of clinical and biomedical informatics and data science. The data scientist will conduct a large research project(s), coordinate the analysis, evaluation and reporting on phases of the project(s); this includes developing research plans and solving highly complex methodology, protocol, procedural and research problems,
Work with PIs to develop research plan, study designs and strategy.
Work with PIs to refine and test hypothesis and interpret results for publications and presentations
Design, setup and run computational experiments to execute algorithms on various types of biomedical or healthcare related data.
Design, setup and run computational experiments to evaluate and benchmark cutting-edge machine learning algorithms.
Develop and modify software and demonstrations.
Create documentation for all software, code and experiments.
Design and implement data infrastructure; Ensure the integrity and security of data, code, and analytical experiments.
Write or help prepare technical reports and/or publications.
Communicate and present analytical results to customers and scientists.
Work independently (or with minimum supervision from other data scientists) on the implementation of assigned project(s)
Work closely with investigators, research personnel and other stakeholders to share progress and present/interpret analysis results
Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously and Prioritize assignments
Comfortable providing rapid and timely response to urgent requests that impact clients
M.S. in Computer Science/Math/Statistics/Physics/Informatics or related technical discipline and 2 years of related experience
Experience with R or Matlab
Experience with SQL or other database technology
Experience with a scripting language (Python, Perl, etc)
Experience writing code for complex computer programs independently. Please provide a link to samples of your code available online (Github or similar services).
Experience with machine learning or statistical methods.
Experience working with messy real-world data
Experience working with clinical data (EMR, Claims) and healthcare code sets (ICD9/ICD10, NDC/RXNorm, LOINC, etc.)
Experience working independently in a rapidly changing scientific environment
Experience publishing scientific papers in conferences/journals
excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills
Multi-tasking capabilities to prioritize assignments and work under limited supervision
PhD in a related field
