Position Summary: The Chief Observer oversees the day-to-day observations and data integrity, as well as maintenance and functioning of data systems of the EOVSA facility. Observing responsibilities include overseeing the work of graduate student Tohbans, responding to Tohban alerts to correct operational problems, performing periodic checks of data quality, and establishing and carrying out a program of calibrations and observational tests to ensure optimal operation of the array. Data system management responsibilities include maintaining the computing systems with up-to-date operating systems, security patches, and proper network and storage performance, maintaining data integrity (data quality, backups), and researching and recommending increased computing capacity as needed to keep up with data requirements. Works under the direction of the Director as needed to assist in maintaining the operation of the observatory.
Prerequisite Qualifications: PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, or related field. Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with operating systems and data management. Working knowledge of radio-astronomical observing and calibration techniques, interferometric imaging, and programming languages such as Python, Fortran, SQL, and web-related languages. Demonstrated aptitude for learning on the job. Interest and ability to participate in scientific research with EOVSA data is a plus.
