His research projects are focused on and related to neuro critical care outcomes. Dr. Souter is the Division Chief of Anesthesia at Harborview Medical Center. A major multi-disciplinary research project currently being conducted is understanding and preventing surgical site infection (SSI) in spinal fusion surgery. The individual in this position will be central to this research collaborative between Allergy & Infectious Diseases, Anesthesiology, Neurological Surgery, School of Pharmacy and others, in that they will coordinate and provide high-level research support for the PIs and scientists conducting this and other studies. This position will be based at Harborview Medical Center and will report to Dr. Souter. Surgical site infection following spinal fusion surgery is a devastating postoperative outcome. Harborview Medical Center (HMC) performs 1,000 spinal fusion surgeries each year, but despite numerous quality improvement efforts targeting this procedural group, surgical site infections have remained fixed at 5-6%. An outcomes clinical research project has been undertaken to discover the reasons and remedies for this debilitating outcome from spinal surgery. The individual acting as research coordinator for this multi-disciplinary, multi-year study will be working with patients who have negative outcomes post-operatively and must understand this special population of patients. This individual is a significant part of the research team. They must be thoroughly knowledgeable of research techniques and protocols involving human subjects; they must have a solid understanding of the research science related to the study; must understand the study goals and compliance issues and be exceptionally skilled at patient interactions to ensure patients feel comfortable with participation. This individual must have expert technical skills (e.g., they will be drawing blood) and must be able to function independently, under general oversight. This individual must know how to input, review, and synthesize data to assist PIs in preparing scientific papers and presentations.Harborview Medical Center is a regional referral center for spinal fusion surgery. In spite of considerable experience and coordinated quality improvement efforts, surgical site infection rates has been consistently higher than local and national levels and has a major impact on patient safety and patient satisfaction. This negatively impacts upon our highly regarded UW Medicine and the University as a whole. This research seeks to understand and mitigate the factors driving the high SSI rates.POSITION RESPONSIBILITIESResearch Coordination of Study = 100%Meet with potential enrollees in the study; determine their eligibility to meet study protocols;Coordinate consent process and enroll eligible subjectsPerform and oversee blood sample collection, processing and storage per study protocols;Oversee and track clinical procedures on patients in the study;Telephone follow up with patients at study-required intervals;Set up and maintain study files in easily retrieveable and compliant manner.
