We are seeking a enthusiastic entry-level candidate who is a service-oriented team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills who enjoys helping people. They should have a recent B.S degree in biology or related field. The candidate will be ready to help researchers with basic aspects of light and electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging projects within the UIC. Microscopy experience from sample preparation to image acquisition and analysis would be a strong plus. A strong desire and willingness to learn is a must, as training in techniques and skills will be a integral part of the position.
The UIC is a “Nikon Center of Excellence” and as such is a training center for future scientists and researchers in both the academic and private sectors. The successful candidate should be prepared to be in a dynamic multi-user environment where four basic areas of service must be covered: a) maximize the availability of advanced imaging technologies and methodologies to faculty, staff, students and external users, b) bring expertise in new imaging technologies to users, c) educate the University community about new imaging technologies, d) promote interaction between developers of new imaging technology and potential users.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: • Services to UIC users. Formal and on-demand training and/or assistance in proper use of basic imaging systems and in the use of image-processing and image-analysis software as needed: (40%) • Sample preparation for microscopy: (35%) • Maintaining general laboratory stock, reagents and organization. (15%) • Creating and optimizing procedures and SOP manuals and routine maintenance of general laboratory equipment (10%).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors of Arts or Science in Biology or science related field, or a combination of education and work experience to equal four (4) years. Experience with general laboratory practices including making solutions, organizing lab stocks, ordering supplies and waste disposal
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience or interest in basic microscopy, including sample preparation for microscopy Strong computer and record keeping skills for maintaining an up to date facility database and laboratory notebook. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal customer service skills Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Ability to work independently under deadlines with minimal guidance, and to work as a team member.
