The University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Research Specialist for the Department of Pathology Research. This position will function as a single specialist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research project(s) and overseeing laboratory research activities.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Perform animal husbandry and PCR genotyping (mice and/or zebrafish).
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations which ensure experimental rigor, safety compliance and supply stock.
Perform laboratory research activities including: mammalian cell culture and transfection, plasmid purification, rodent muscle and brain dissection, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, autoclaving materials, maintaining equipment, data analysis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience or in related a field of study.
Experience: Three (3) years of related experience including 2 years in the relevant research specialization.
Preferred: Prior experience as a Research Laboratory Assistant/Specialist. Prior experience with zebrafish studies.
Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to conduct multiple assignments simultaneously to maintain flow of all projects.
Ability to walk long distances and stand for extended periods.
Ability to maintain compatible working relationships with supervisor and other laboratory technical personnel in order to accomplish the goals of the laboratories' projects.
Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities.
Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty.
Skill in interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet software applications.
Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform simple equipment repairs.
