The Histology Technician IV is responsible for proficiently performing routine histology technique, solution preparation, supply management, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment and workstations, and good documentation practices (GDP) in recordkeeping, to support Quality Control Product Release Testing. This includes but is not limited to: sample receipt and accessioning, initial sample preparation, standard grossing and observations, fixation, paraffin and cryo-embedding, paraffin and cryo-microtomy, and Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining. The Histology Technician IV will perform some histochemical stains (Special Stains) e.g. Verhoeff-Van Gieson (VVG); as well as routine histology testing of donor biopsies, explants, fresh, in-process, or final product samples for Tissue Services, Complaints, and Research & Development (R&D), as assigned. Compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), laboratory safety procedures, and maintenance of department databases/files are required. Additionally, the Histology Technician IV is responsible for troubleshooting histology technique and equipment issues; support equipment validations; cross-functional training activities; continuous/process improvement projects; and the Quality Management System.
Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
Ability to work in laboratory environments, with potentially bio-hazardous materials including human and animal tissues and a variety of hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens and teratogens.
Experience with standard laboratory equipment operation, e.g. balance, pH meter, centrifuge, incubators, shakers, stirrers, water bath, and hot plate.
Experience with histology equipment operation, e.g. tissue processors, embedding units, paratrimmer, microtome, cryostat, and auto-stainer.
Experience in troubleshooting histology technique, e.g. processing, embedding, microtomy, and H&E staining.
Basic Mechanical skills and Lifting up to 20 lbs
Technical Certification (HT, HTL, QIHC, or related) preferred/eligible
Laboratory & Chemical Safety, and Blood Borne Pathogens training
Organizational Skills; and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks/projects
Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with all levels of management, internal and external customers, vendors, and those of diverse cultures.
Familiar with AATB, ISO, FDA, and USP regulations/guidelines, and audits.
Good visual skills, manual dexterity and eye-to-hand coordination
Ability to follow SOP’s and Work Instructions with attention to detail
Strong math skills, aptitude for analysis and technical writing
Cell Biology and Tissue Structure knowledge
Microscopic and Image analysis is a plus
Process Improvement experience, e.g. six-sigma, LEAN principles, etc…
