Department: MANETTI SHREM MUSEUM - 063070 Department Description: This position joins an energetic team to shape the purpose, mission and impact of a new art museum at a top-ten public research university, which is also the repository of an important art historical legacy. The ideal candidate will be inspired by the creative and educational potential of connecting contemporary art across diverse fields of study within and beyond the humanities.
Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.
Uses advanced subject area knowledge and curatorial expertise to resolve highly complex issues and fulfill responsibilities. Assignments are defined by overall objectives and incumbents exercise judgment in selecting methods for obtaining results. Work is performed independently under general consultative leadership.

Job Summary: Under general direction of the Founding Director, and working closely with the museum's leadership boards, the Curator-at-large will work part-time and independently in a regional office location to contribute to making the Manetti Shrem Museum a dynamic site for an artistic program that crosses time periods and cultures and investigates issues of broad contemporary relevance.
The Curator-at-large will be responsible for oversight, management and growth of the museum's collections. The incumbent must possess a progressive vision for curatorial and collections activities, a vision in keeping with the innovative and irreverent history of the university. Will also serve as a key member of the fundraising team to develop support for the collection, exhibitions, and other programs.
The museum is an engaged partner in the intellectual work of the campus, involving students, faculty and staff as initiators, partners, and subjects in the research and development of all aspects of its artistic program. The Curator-at-large will increase the museum's integration into the university curriculum and engage more of the campus intellectual assets.
The Curator-at-large will represent the Manetti Shrem Museum locally at UC Davis and to national and international audiences, with a special focus on developing new relationships in the Northeast region of the US.
Work Environment: Work flexible schedule during evenings and weekends to meet deadlines. Limited vacation usage during peak workload periods.
Occasional travel to visit museum sites and to meet with clients.

Minimum Qualifications: Expertise in the field of contemporary art with skills to work beyond area of specialization to support the museum's inclusive artistic program.
Demonstrated specialized knowledge of the UC Davis artistic legacy and its many related artists.
Demonstrated minimum of 5 years leadership and curatorial experience in all aspects of exhibition development, having implemented exhibition and catalogue projects of significant scale.
Track record of significant, academically rigorous and compelling exhibitions and publications. Excellent writing samples from museum publications.
Acquaintance with and enthusiasm for museum education.
Facility with public presentation and convening diverse public groups.
Experience using managerial and leadership skills to lead by example and encourage collaborative efforts.
Donor cultivation and relationship building skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a higher education environment.
Knowledge of collection building, connoisseurship, ethical and legal standards for acquisition, and of the current market.
Experience using interpersonal, communication, collaborative, negotiating and team-building skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, faculty, vendors, volunteers and university officials, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism and discretion.
