To ensure that laboratory classes in the biological sciences and physical sciences departments run efficiently at the Doheny campus, as well as between the Chalon and Doheny campuses. The lab technician will perform lab maintenance, equipment and supply planning, and lab preparatory functions allowing faculty to focus their attention on teaching and advising excellence.
Communicate with academic personnel to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans.
Communicate and coordinate the supply purchasing needs with Laboratory Coordinator at Chalon.
Clear away equipment, materials, media, cultures, reagents and/or chemicals and return them to its place of storage, unless requested to leave it out, in time to provide a safe and tidy working environment for the following class.
Ensure the practices and procedures, including safety practices and procedures followed in the laboratories.
Occasionally assist laboratory instructors during the lab period.
Maintain proper storage and inventory of specimens in compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
Collect, prepare, and process biohazard wastes.
Follow sterile procedures.
Communicate and coordinate with facilities any work that may need to be done in the laboratories.
Communicate with vendors to coordinate equipment maintenance, repairs and supplies and equipment deliveries/pick-ups.
Supervise Laboratory Assistants
Molarity, metric units of measurement, and conversion factors sufficient to calculate quantities of chemicals needed
Sterile technique to reduce risk of contamination
The proper methods used in the disposal of laboratory materials
Calibration and adjustment techniques as applied to laboratory equipment
The properties and characteristics of chemicals
Laboratory skills sufficient to perform accurate weighing, mixing, pH adjustment
Basic computer skills (familiarity with spreadsheet, internet, e-mail, data base applications, etc.)
The general principles of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics as attained through science major course work leading to a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field
The operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, stir/hot plates, water baths, dry baths, meters, microscopes, incubators, laboratory water system, electrophoresis equipment, autoclaves, spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographs
Abilities and Skills:
