University of Massachusetts Medical School & UMass Memorial Health Care
The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) seek a new Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. As the largest provider of psychiatric care in Central Massachusetts, a leading model for public and private-sector partnerships, and a central role in a large research institution, the Department of Psychiatry is positioned for the next Chair to make an impact at the cutting edge of psychiatric treatment, research, and training.
The Department of Psychiatry blends together the best of the outstanding academic environment of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the state-of-the-art, recovery-oriented integrated care of UMass Memorial Health Care. The Department is a national leader in public sector psychiatry, and its research is not only “bench to bedside,” but equally as important, “bedside to community.” With its focus on the treatment and prevention of mental illness and addiction, as well as its training programs and culture of mentoring, the next generation of practitioners are encouraged to become lifelong learners and healthcare innovators. The Department is also home to one of only a few National Centers on Homelessness Among Veterans.
A national leader in public sector psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, autism spectrum disorders, forensic psychiatry, neuropsychiatry and women’s mental health, the Department consists of over 400 faculty (including 208 volunteer faculty), and over 300 staff, 250 of whom work on public sector state contracts. The Department’s training programs are highly competitive, educating 26 residents, 9 fellows, and many other trainees including research and clinical post docs, psychology interns, and Graduate School of Biological Sciences (GSBS) students supported by the Department.
The Chair of the Department will be deeply committed to the public sector mission, and will align the research, clinical, and educational missions within that overarching theme. The Chair must support the Department’s outstanding training programs, bolster its research enterprise, and work effectively with a variety of external partners to integrate clinical care. This leader must be a staunch advocate for the Department while also working collaboratively with the medical school, hospital, and system leadership. The Chair must bring extensive experience in fiscal management; recruiting and mentoring a diverse faculty, staff, and student body; growing clinical, translational, and basic science research; fostering interdisciplinary collaborations; and navigating the challenges facing academic medical centers today. The successful candidate must have a medical degree and board certification, as well as eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts.
As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, UMMS recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
