Sandy Spring Friends School is seeking a highly qualified bus and vehicle mechanic to join our maintenance staff. In this role, the mechanic manages all aspects of identifying and repairing problems as they arise, and is responsible for the daily routine maintenance and repairs of buses, passenger vehicles, golf carts, and other vehicular equipment. This position reports to the Director of Facilities and Transportation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Responds to administrative requests for completing work orders (and/or projects) in a timely, efficient, and productive manner.
Manages the three MD State inspections required for school buses and conducts and/or facilitates repairs needed to pass inspection.
Modifies and/or performs fabrication work on vehicle bodies and construction machinery to meet particular requirements.
Disassembles, cleans, inspects, repairs, adjusts, installs and performs routine preventive maintenance on passenger vehicles, truck and trailer accessories, and components.
Repairs and overhauls vehicular systems, including: fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems; power transmissions and differentials, universal joints and hydraulic units; steering mechanisms and other controls; wheel alignments and emission control systems.
Performs minor arc and gas welding repair.
Maintains and installs all electrical components, such as directional lights, safety warning lights, starting and charging systems, etc., on all types of vehicles.
Repairs vehicle body and chassis parts using hand and power tools, and installs and repairs power take-off equipment such as tractors and mowers.
Changes tires and balances wheels
Identifies materials necessary for completing duties.
Performs duties to meet regional safety guidelines and requirements.
Facilitates the three Md. State inspections required for school buses, to include the management of or repairing of items needed to pass inspection.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner; knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices; understands and follows oral and written instructions; estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; ability to diagnose and determine engine and other operating defects; working knowledge of modern automotive maintenance methods and procedures including the proper and safe use of general automotive repair tools and equipment; ability to skillfully use hand and power tools of the trade; performs skilled automotive repair work involving the use of specialized tools, instruments and equipment; keeps up-to-date work records; ability to use independent judgment and initiative to continue training in the latest knowledge and techniques of the trade.
Minimum Job Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and 7 years minimum experience as a bus and vehicle mechanic. Requires valid Maryland Commercial Driver’s License for School Bus (Pre-Trip, Passenger, and Air Brakes), medical examination card and certification in Automotive Mechanic work.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct reports.
Physical Requirements: This is a highly physical position requiring but not limited to the following:
Standing, squatting, bending, kneeling, twisting and kneeling or reaching for most of your day as well as navigating stairs frequently. Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, push/pull greater than 50 pounds. Vehicle driving is a requirement.
Also required is normal vision including distance, peripheral, and depth perception, normal visual color discrimination, normal hearing, and speaking/reading/writing English proficiently.
Exposure to chemicals, noise levels above 85dB, dust, fumes, odors, humidity, as well as slippery and uneven surfaces should be expected.
