ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY: Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on a scenic waterfront site in Vallejo, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1100 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. The campus currently offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Global and Maritime Studies, and Business Administration. A master's degree in Transportation and Engineering Management is offered as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Position Summary: The Simulator Operator, reporting to the Director of Marine Programs, operates systems in support of simulation education, training and assessment for both undergraduate and professional level courses, as well as the use of simulators for maritime research. The Simulator Operator also assists the Simulation Technical Lead and Simulation Technician in the maintenance and repair of all simulation equipment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as primary simulator operator for Sim I and Sim II classes. Assist the Simulation Technical Lead in the startup and securing of all simulation equipment in the Simulation Center each day. Assist the Marine Transportation faculty in development of new simulation scenarios. Assist Simulation Technical Lead and Simulation Technician with the routine maintenance and repair of all simulations equipment. Perform routine preventative maintenance, equipment alignment and calibrations. Replace worn parts.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: At least five years seagoing experience in the commercial US Maritime Industry. Experience as a commissioned US Navy Surface Warfare officer may be substituted for up to four years of the merchant marine experience. Unlimited USCG 2nd Mate License Knowledge of and experience with Wasilla (Transas) simulators, especially software. Ability to plan and organize simulation-training sessions. Ability to adjust and perform routine maintenance and repair of simulators.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Marine Transportation or related field Teaching experience at the college or maritime professional level Experience with Kongsberg and/or L3 simulations equipment Familiarity or experience with marine engineering
PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
HOURS of TRAVEL/WORK: Out-of-state travel may be required to receive vendor specific training necessary for effective job performance and keeping abreast of technological developments in the simulations field.
BACKGROUND CHECK: A background check (including a criminal records check) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
