Department: BODEGA MARINE LABORATORY - 061805 Department Description: Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the University of California, Davis. Located in Bodega Bay, BML and its surrounding 362-acre Reserve provides research and instructional facilities for resident and campus-based faculty, researchers and students. About 100 scientists maintain active research and teaching programs, more than 50 graduate students conduct research on the site, and there are about 50 employees under a variety of policies and collective bargaining agreements. In addition, the Laboratory hosts many US and international visiting scientists, and hosts conferences and retreats. Primary research emphasis is on oceanographic influences on marine populations; coastal atmospheric chemistry; marine ecology and impacts of non-native species; responses of marine organisms to environmental stress; fish ecology, conservation and restoration; and coastal terrestrial ecology.

Job Summary: One of two 50% Cook positions under the direction of the Conferences & Events Manager, the cook prepares and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for groups ranging in size from 10-150. Coordinates portion size and cooking times in order to serve all customers a quality product. Prepares weekly menu and shopping lists, while coordinating scheduled deliveries from vendors. Provides back up support to other food services staff and supervisor.
Physical Demands: -Lift 30 lb. ice chests, boxes of food and kitchen equipment. -Stand for long periods of time. -Short notice of schedule changes to cover shifts is often required. -Work with constant interruptions, distractions, and noise from telephone conversations, visitors, staff, etc. -Work on a computer and keyboard for extended periods of time. -May work in unfavorable weather conditions.
Work Environment: -This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check. -Restricted vacation during peak periods. -Valid CA driver's license required. -May be required to drive personal vehicle to attend meetings or to otherwise conduct business.

Minimum Qualifications: -Demonstrated experience in industrial food service, cooking and serving for large groups.
-Experience working with a number of vendors, keeping track of supplies, invoices and deliveries.
-Experience in creating menus and supply orders using word processing programs and email.
-Skill to judge proper portion size and coordinate cooking times of various dishes so they can all be served at once.
-Experience using email to communicate with staff.
Preferred Qualifications: -Experience cooking and serving food in an institutional setting.
-Experience placing supply orders via computer, telephone, fax and vendor websites.
-Serv Safe Certified.
-Catering experience preparing, transporting to various locations, and serving meals while under time constraints and heavy work load.
-Knowledge of preparing menu items to individuals with food allergies and dietary restrictions.
