The Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering at Ames Laboratory seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Technician.Â Ames Laboratory is a United States Department of Energy National (DOE) Laboratory contracted to Iowa State University.Â
The Research Technician will be responsible for general laboratory oversight and coordination. This position will work independently and collaboratively to manufacture permanent magnets. This will involve project management, report writing and data analysis. Additionally, this position will be responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment related to magnet fabrication in the research laboratory.Â This position will be a key team member in the manufacturing of permanent magnets needed to complete a project funded by the DOE.
The successful candidate will have effective management and organizational skills, the ability to work well with a diverse population, and the ability to communicate effectively. In addition, this team member will be able to provide predictable and consistent results with material processing.Â This position is expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
â¢ Performs experiments and independently records data from complex laboratory equipment.
â¢ Examines data with reference to the criteria standards, and/or requirements of a particular experiment or process.
â¢ Assembles, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, installs, maintains, and operates specific laboratory equipment and apparatus.
â¢ May design laboratory equipment and apparatus.
â¢ Provides technical assistance to hourly, undergraduate and graduate students, and research staff by providing information or clarifying and working out details of a specific experiment or process within the framework of established procedures.
â¢ Prepares and may instruct laboratory personnel in the preparation and processing of research samples for use in research studies.
â¢ Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of supplies, services, and instruments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
â¢ Skill in the operation and repair of laboratory equipment.
â¢ Skill in metallographic preparation and analysis.
â¢ Knowledge of metallographic procedures for cutting, polishing, etching, photographing, and physical characteristic measurements of metal/ceramic specimens.
â¢ Knowledge of general safety regulations and chemical hygiene.
â¢ Knowledge of the distillation process for pure metals.
â¢ Knowledge of metal joining techniques and related safety procedures.
â¢ Knowledge of mechanical and diffusion based vacuum systems, basic electronics, and mechanical aptitude.
â¢ Ability to operate microprocessor controlled process equipment and instruments.
â¢ Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
â¢ Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
â¢ Ability to safely operate, repair and maintain standard and specialized research equipment.
â¢ Ability to collect data and accurately keep appropriate records.
â¢ Ability to work with chemicals.
â¢ Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
â¢ Ability to perform hand-eye tasks in preparing samples.
