Departmental Overview The Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) is an innovative new, professional graduate degree program being launched during the 2019-20 academic year, and which will enroll its first cohort of students in Fall 2020. Because today's most pressing societal challenges cut across disciplinary boundaries, thoughtful new approaches and design toolkits are needed to prepare students for creative technical roles. Demand for employees trained in emerging technologies and design has grown by 250% in the past 10 years, according to market research conducted by New Academic Ventures at Berkeley. The program will focus on equipping students to fill these roles, and to develop as engaged and responsive social practitioners as they connect technical rigor, design theory and social practice. Over 17 months, students will develop core skills in design process, prototyping and communication, as well as a critical lens on technology and design through a sequence of debate-focused seminars.
The MDes is a three-semester, on-campus degree offered jointly by the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Environmental Design (CED). The College of Engineering's Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation will play a key role in developing and delivering the core curriculum for this new program, and will be the administrative home for the program. Faculty leadership for the program is led by an Academic Director, representing CoE, and an Associate Director, representing CED, with input from an Education Committee and Affiliated Faculty Group.
The Executive Director will play an essential, leadership role in the creation of this new degree program, and is responsible for advancing the overall academic mission of the program and ensuring its high quality. This role reports to the Academic Director for the MDes, and will engage closely with the faculty leadership and affiliated faculty. The Executive Director is the lead staff member responsible for overseeing the entirety of the degree program, including student services; marketing/outreach, admissions, and recruitment; staff management; finances; and academic administration. The Executive Director will supervise, and be supported by a student services advisor and a career services/marketing specialist.
The position involves managing a significant, independent academic or research program. Formulates program strategies and goals. Plans, directs and controls program budget and other related resources.
Responsibilities Directs and administers the MDes program with complete administrative and programmatic responsibility.
40% Academic Administration and Curriculum Planning: - With support from the Student Services Advisor, manages curriculum planning and scheduling for all required courses. - Works with Academic and Associate Directors to fill teaching positions, through recruiting senate faculty to teach, and hiring lecturers and GSIs. - Reviews course evaluations, reviews exceptional requests for course requirements from students, and provides input to faculty leadership and Education Committee on proposed changes to curriculum. - Interprets campus policy, and develops policies internal to MDes program as appropriate.
Student Services: - With support from student services and career services staff, develops and implements an excellent student services program available to all MDes students, including academic and career advising and co-curricular programming. - Is responsible for overall student experience, and works to ensure a positive culture for each cohort of students, and to achieve high program satisfaction amongst current MDes students.
Program Marketing, Outreach, and Student Recruitment: - Develops recruitment programs, events, materials, and outreach services to engage potential students. Makes use of a range of media/methods (in-person, print, electronic) and scales (one-on-one, large events) to achieve recruitment goals. Provides tailored content to support marketing efforts. - Coordinates with academic departments, alumni, and industry/organization partners to identify and leverage potential student recruitment sources. - Serves as primary point person for prospective students, parents, etc. on questions regarding the MDes through a variety of communication channels. - Evaluates effectiveness of recruitment programs and makes recommendations to enhance yields.
Admissions: - With faculty leadership, manages and evaluates MDes admissions program. - Compiles and analyzes admissions metrics and statistics. - Evaluates the effectiveness of the admissions program in coordination with the leadership and Education Committee. Recommends improvements.
Financial aid: - Evaluates and coordinates financial aid, fellowship, and scholarship awards to meet strategic goals, and to enhance yield and cohort diversity.
- Recommends resolution of extremely specialized and complex financial aid issues.
- Presents financial aid analysis and recommendations to Education Committee.
25% Manages program budgeting, finances, HR, and data - Leads program budgeting (with oversight from faculty leadership); provides financial oversight and generates quarterly reports on actual spending and revenue. Works with College of Engineering and College of Environmental Design staff and leadership to allocate program revenues. - Tracks key metrics and data for the MDes, including accounting for enrollment of self-supporting MDes students in regular, state-supported courses - Produces annual reports for campus and/or UCOP on program finances, and requests approval for program fee. - Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams, including industry sponsorships and scholarships. - Recommends and implements decisions on issues (operational and budget processes, admissions, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning) that have program-wide impact. Advise faculty leadership on matters concerning several strategic and/or functional areas and constituencies. - Manages HR resources; supervises student, contract and/or career staff. Provides on-boarding and other support to lecturers.
10% Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly. Creates, administers, and analyzes regular student surveys to determine program effectiveness in meeting strategic academic goals.
10% Coordinates with key staff in the Jacobs Institute, College of Engineering, and College of Environmental Design.
5% Participates in professional conferences and provides external visibility to the MDes program.
5% As program develops, develops and implements an alumni engagement strategy.

Desirable but not required: academic or professional background related to design and/or emerging technologies.
Required: Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Knowledge of common University-specific tools, systems, and procedures.
Preferred: Advanced degree in related areas.
