The Office of the Dean and Department of Mathematics in Eberly College of Arts & Sciences at West Virginia University is seeking applicants for a Professional Technologist II (Professional Technologist 2.309). The incumbent will report directly to the Director of IT in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences in conjunction with the Chair of the Department of Mathematics. The Professional Technologist II provides server administration, maintains security for all IT devices, maintains and updates departmental website, provides Mac and PC desktop and lab support, and assists with programming.
In order to be successful in this role, the ideal candidates will:
Design, maintain, and support an enterprise-level cluster of virtualized Windows and Linux servers using virtualization software such as MS Hyper-V or VMware to support the academic and research mission of the Math Department.
Research hardware and software solutions to optimize server cluster to ensure high availability. Maintain and support all Math servers for a large variety of services including license management, file servers, database servers, print servers, etc. May require after hours and weekend availability to resolve critical system downtime.
Maintain security for all departmental IT devices (Mac and PC). Research and apply solutions to remediate potential vulnerabilities and exploits. Work with College and University security staff to ensure all policies and procedures are followed. Ensure best practices are followed for securing Math IT enterprise.
Manage student workers and Graduate Assistants/Professional Technologist interns in support of departmental IT resources.
Maintain and update departmental websites that follow branding guidelines posted at brand.wvu.edu. Publish content to the website. Make sure all external facing websites meet accessibility standards. Maintain Math websites on University servers.
Maintain all 400 Math computing systems. Includes Mac and PC departmental computers (hardware maintenance, software updates, and network imaging) including Faculty computers, Graduate student computers, and approximately 300 lab computers. Support all peripheral devices used by desktops especially local and networked printers.
Build custom faculty workstations. Support AV in departmental classrooms/conference rooms.
Create, maintain, and update a custom database system that automatically processes all WVU students and places them into their correct math and chemistry courses based on the students' ACT, SAT, or ALEKS scores.
Create, maintain, update website app where students can view their math and chemistry placement results from the department website @ math.wvu.edu.
Create, maintain, and update data flow processes for importing student placement results.
Export placement scores into BANNER for pre-requisite checking and course registration.
Write and maintain custom software that generates course lists for Math dept applications.
Create, maintain and update custom software that tracks all students in Math labs.
Manage licenses for software used by the department and other WVU units. Order software and Maintain network license servers for Matlab, Maple and Mathematica. Attend IT staff meetings and represent ECAS IT at meetings when required.
Manage department IT budget. Process purchases in Mountaineer Marketplace.
Bachelor's degree required. Degree or certification in technology field preferred.
Two (2) years combined experience with:
General software and hardware knowledge
Programming and proficiency skills using multiple technologies:
Net programming languages, Sql Server, Mysql
Powershell and Bash
